New single "Hinode" out now on Beatport - 24/04/08

’Hinode’ is a tribute and farewell to our favourite club, Yellow in Tokyo. We’ve played some great gigs there, six or seven hours in the dark with eight hundred people and one strobe light – perfection. Endless saki in the bar, obligatory stalkers ("93!" and Hedgehog Girl step forward please), smoke and heat on the dance floor; finally emerging deafened and sun blinded into the brilliance of Saturday mid-morning in Tokyo.

Just like the club that inspired it ’Hinode’ is all about the squirming, twisting techy bass-line and heavy beats – until the sci-fi electronics and space-rock synths start pouring out of the speakers. Backing up the original is an exceptional remix from our favourite techno genius - Fergie. We’ve been playing his ’Anon’ track ever since Ferg slipped us a demo last year; since then there’s never been any doubt about who was going to remix Hinode.

Dubfire - "Been loving the new sound Fergie’s been pushing on the production front and this one’s another monster. Full support!"

Danny Howells – "Sounds wicked – original and Ferg mix."

John Digweed - "Fergies mix has been going down well"

Steve Lawler - "Love the Fergie mix."

Sander Kleinenberg – "Quality!"

Hernan Cattaneo – "VERY good, both mixes."

Gregor Tresher – "I like Fergie’s mix, something for the bigger floors, will def play it out."

Stephan Bodzin - "Fergie's is good for me!"

Pig & Dan - "Love the remix."

Dave Seaman - "Had this off the boys a while back. Love both mixes, will try Fergie's now."

Pete Heller - "Both mixes are ace! Fergie just shades it for me."

Layo Paskin - "Fergie's mix is my pick here."

Jody Wisternoff – "Excellent!"

DJ Vibe – "Fergie’s mix is great for me."

Umek – "Fergie remix is excellent."

Meat Katie – "Fergie’s mix sounds like Oliver Huntemann…. But that’s a good thing. I’m still playing the last KU single. Nice work!"

Matthew Dekay – "Excellent deep power track of Fergie! Love it…"

Hector Romero – "Ahh yes I totally relate. In November ’07 I was fortunate enough to play 1 last time at Yellowbefore it shuts it’s doors this coming summer. Now it’s Fri March 6th and I’m playing tonight at Air in Tokyo where this tune will be rocked. Well done guys "

King Unique "Yohkoh" - 26/10/07

King Unique are back with a killer new single 'Yohkoh'. A melodic tech/prog/house (or whatever it's called these days) gurn-fest of epic proportions, 'Yohkoh' is KU's first single since their year off from the studio - a year that saw them tour their 'Electric' mix album across the globe, and left Matthew Roberts marooned in a mud soaked Brazilian rainforest and Matt Thomas cornered by Tasmanian Devils on a beach at midnight - amongst many other (mis)adventures... Brimful of these groovy experiences the Matts returned to the studio and poured out 'Yohkoh', a tribute to life, love, happiness and the miracle of having a job where you get paid to go to Tokyo and drink yourself unconscious.

Acidic and euphoric in equal measure, Detroit flavoured riffs and a rumbling twisting bass slide along on the back of surging soaring strings and techno beats, all turned out in the trademark King Unique style. Having slipped a cheeky early copy to Danny Howells he emailed straight back to say, "Beautiful tune, one of the best you've done I think. Thank you!!" (Thank you too Danny, cheque's in the post. Just please don't spend it on a shirt...)

Backing up the KU original are a couple of heavyweight remixes - Pitch & Hold create a dark driving mix that's all about a relentless snarling bass groove, underpinning epileptic riffs and clanging chimes. We like it - and so does Laurent Garnier while we're name dropping. The second remix sees Luke Dzierzek fresh back from spending all his Citroen royalties at the Spearmint Rhino club and taking things into savage big-room territory with his trademark glitch assault. A collision of tech/breaks/house/electro/dubst...oh fuck it - it's pure Dzierzek. And that's why we like it.

Coming on vinyl and download in November.

Merkins "I Sleep In Sellotape / Nesk" - 13/07/07

Matt "Watkins" Thomas (of King Unique) and his apprentice/drug monkey/stalker Steve Mercer (of no fixed address) invite you to get your Merkins on. Curfew are proud to bring you the tech-dirt sounds of Merkins 'I Sleep In Sellotape' and 'Nesk', the latest instalment on King Unique's Curfew imprint. 'I Sleep In Sellotape' is like Daft Punk doing minimal with Brian Eno adding the whooshy bits. Thunderous walking bass and a nasty nasal sliding little synth line that sounds like you're being bullied at primary school (it makes sense when you hear it). Dry and tracky as you like – until the icy chords come in and the whole thing trips out in a Kupon style. And 'Nesk' is more of the same - but backwards . The very limited number of pre-promo copies have been heavily supported by Hernan Catmerkin, Dave Seamerkin, Paolo Merkin and of course Sasha and Merkinweed. Get your Merkins on.

King Unique Broadcast 9 - 09/07/07

From the Rolling Stones to Radio Slave in 60 minutes - it has to be the 9th instalment of the cult radio mix series, King Unique Broadcast. One hour of all that is latest and greatest in the underground electronic scene – re-edited, remixed, dubbed out, chopped up, chewed thoroughly and spat out by the two Matts.

Bodzin & Romboy to Beck & Ricardo, the Martins to the Merkins, Kiko to KU, taking in tracks from Funk D’Void, Boards of Canada, Pitch & Hold, Samuel L. Sessions – we even got beat-boxing and the ‘Sex, Lies and Videotape’ soundtrack in there for f**k’s sake. New King Unique remixes of Tracey Thorn and Gabriel & Dresden plus sneak previews of this summer’s releases on Curfew from Merkins and Magik Johnson.

Like Micky Jagger says – everybody seems to be ready. Are you ready?

New KU live set available - 12/04/07

Recorded last month at the mighty Lush, two hours of the two Matts laying down the electronic dirt. Go and get it from www.kubroadcast.co.uk

Kupon "Zoom In / Zoom Out" - out now - 30/09/06

Kupon was born out of King Unique taking a few days off from being King Unique and doing two tracks of whatever we wanted. The results are the dark and bottom-heavy "Zoom Out" (a mixture of fat acidic minimal, classic 2001-era prog and a 747 flying through your frontal lobes) and "Zoom In", its melodic, psychedelic twin.

Both tracks have earned Radio 1 plays from Pete Tong, been heavily championed by Fergie (who made Zoom Out the 'Speaker Freaker' on his show) and
turned up in shows as diverse as Annie Mac and The Blue Room. Not your typical club banger then...

The promo copies inspired intense declarations of love from Sasha, Deep Dish ("Zoom In is fucking amazing!"), Steve Lawler (used both tracks on his Wasted promo CD), James Lavelle, Nic Fanciulli ("Huge on the terrace at Space"), John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, James Zabiela ("Hoovers rule. More Hoovers for House. Waaaaarb"), Danny Howells, Paul Woolford ("Zoom In is the killer, fucking sounds great"), Chris Lake and Claude von Stroke.

Out now on Curfew, vinyl is in the shops and digital downloads are available from Beatport and DJDownload.

Kupon freaks speakers - 5/08/06

It's official, Kupon's "Zoom In / Zoom Out" EP is going to be a biggy. Lavish declarations of love and support from DJs including Sasha, Tong, Deep Dish, Lawler, Tenaglia, Howells, Zabiela, Woolford, Fanciulli. And best of all, vodka-drinking lightweight and professional Irishman Fergie has made Zoom Out the Speaker Freaker on his Radio 1 show. Happy days indeed.

King Unique - Rui Da Silva - James Talk - 4/07/06

7th of July - it's Curfew Time. Get off the streets...
No podium dancers, no posers, no jugglers, none of that bollocks - just 6 hours of underground house in the heart of London. We beef up the sound system, unscrew most of the light bulbs and invite along our favourite DJs and producers so that we can nick all the CDs out of their wallet.

Next party is this week, Friday July 7th, and we'll be launching the Curfew label, first release "To The Left". King Unique will be playing their regular headline slot, joined by the Pac-meister himself, Rui da Silva. New noise on the block James Talk is on hand to kick things off at midnight. Or possibly just kick off at midnight, depending on how much Ketamine he's had this week.

We're giving away 10 FREE guest list places for you fine dudes. If you fancy a night out on the dirt and you can get yourself to London on the 7th of July then drop an email to list@kingunique.com and we'll put your name in the hat. First five names we pull out on the 6th will get free entry for themselves and the mate/love interest of their choice.

Down The Pub with Fergie - 1/07/06

You can hear the two Matts being interviewed on Fergie's Radio 1 show tonight at 11pm. Catch up with all the news about the Curfew label, KU's new single "To The Left" and enigmatic producers Kupon.

Plus* - what happened to Fergie at last year's Radio 1 Ibiza weekend; Matt T tells all about sex, drugs and Penfold from Danger Mouse; Matthew R tells all about driving, drugs and why the two don't mix.

* As long as the BBC don't cut these bits. (Which they will).

If you can't receive Radio 1 you can listen to the show online here.

New live mix online now - 13/05/06

Brand new in the Live Archive, King Unique's set at Godskitchen from the 6th of May - the two Matts mixing up CDs, Ableton and overdubs for the Brummie massive. Right-click here to download it or click here to check out all KU's online mixes.

King Unique - Serge Santiago - Scott Udberg - 25/04/06

5th of May - it's Curfew Time.
King Unique's bi-monthly Turnmills residency is once again looming large on the calendar. KU will be performing their new improved more-knobs-and-sliders Ableton set for the first time in London - so expect even more techno-trickery and Loud Electronic Dirt in the booth than normal. You still want more? OK, how about one of the hottest producers of the last 5 years, the Italo-house don himself, Serge Santiago. Prolific remixer, former Radio Slave and DJ-ing maestro who established himself at the legendary Stompaphunk in Brighton, Serge will be bringing his trademark electro-funk sound to Curfew Time. Plus, to heat things up at the start of the evening we have The Man From The North himself - Scott Udberg - one of the finest DJs to come out of the icy frozen wastes of Newcastle. Udberg's superb support sets for both of KU's recent Newcastle gigs helped make both nights legends. The Man From The North's going for the hat-trick at Curfew Time...

We're giving away 10 FREE guest list places for you fine dudes. If you fancy a night out on the dirt and you can get yourself to London on the 5th of May then drop an email to list@kingunique.com and we'll put your name in the hat. First five names we pull out on the 28th will get free entry for themselves and the mate/love interest of their choice.

Tonight on Dasding - 13/03/06

Attention all Germans! KU mix on Dasding FM tonight. Not German? Hear it here.

Feels LIke Love - more love for the KU remix - 13/03/06

"Already getting hammered in its original version by Radio 1 and Kiss FM but it's the new remixes which are getting the attention on the dance floor. Rockers King Unique deliver a barnstorming remix and dub full of electro funk and mentasm madness. The vocals get cut-up and filtered to perfection over a hypnotic groove." DMC Update, Buzz Hot One.

When the Curfew's over - 08/03/06

The opening night of Curfew Time was at Turnmills on Friday, big up to everyone who came down and rammed the place out. Loud electronic dirt on the soundsystem, LED badges and watches de rigueur in the DJ booth, freaky dancing from the freaks on the dancefloor - love it.
KU played two hours of mutant riff house including a couple of unreleased new tracks of their own; there'll be an hour of the set up on the net soon, watch this space. Great sets from the boy Talk and the Mojo like Paolo, we'll be seeing more of them later this year, subject to negotiating their outrageous contractual demands - seriously James, what are you going to do with 8 hookers that you couldn't do with 6? :)

Photos from the night are here,
cheers to Paolo, Talk, thegreg and teamstella for passing on their pics. Next time we'll remember to bring a camera too...

It's Curfew Time - 03/03/06

It's Curfew Time. Turnmills. Tonight.
King Unique. Paolo Mojo. James Talk.
See you there.

KU remix tops Buzz and Coolcuts charts - 02/03/06

KU drop their big ass remix of 'Feels Like Love' for the Renaissance crowd at the Cross

Oh yeah baby, number one :) King Unique's remix of Teamsters' "Feels Like Love" has topped the Buzz and Coolcut charts this week. A psychotic collision of sub-sonic pimp bass and rave hoovers, topped off with stuttering glitch-vocals and Duane Eddy guitar - it's one big-assed slice of loud electronic dirt.
Speaking of number ones, the KU remix of "Speechless" by Mish Mash also topped the Coolcuts last month. 2006 is looking like another big year...

Curfew Time: Free entry comp - 17/02/06

Curfew Time, King Unique's new residency at Turnmills starts on the 3rd of March, bringing Loud Electronic Dirt to the London masses. To mark the opening night we're giving away 20 FREE guest list places. Mash Up - 01/02/06

Underground girl-pleasing anthem "Speechless" by Mish Mash is the latest track to get the KU remix treatment. Already a big hit on Crosstown Rebels the KU version ups the pressure for the dirt fiends while still keeping the ladies dancing to the wiggly bass. Check the circa 1988 string stabs dudes - more retro than Terry Farley DJ-ing at a class reunion.

Dandelion Crush - 01/02/06

It's here! New improved nostalgia - even better than it used to be! KU's homage to 808 State's finest moment hits the plastic palaces on February 27th, courtesy of those rose-tinted spectacle wearers at Alternative Route. A choice blend of Sega synths and psychedelic saxophones, available in original Atlantic or new Bush II Bush flavour.

Curfew Time - Opening Night Line-Up - 10/01/06

King Unique's new residency at London's Turnmills starts on the 3rd of March with KU in the cockpit, Paolo Mojo dropping bombs and James Talk as tail gunner. Expect a fire storm of dirty house. For more details on Curfew Time nights click here.

Mailing LIst - 10/01/06

The KU mailing list is now up and running - join it and we'll let you know about tracks that are coming out, gigs we're playing, and where you can hear the latest 'King Unique Broadcast' radio mix. Most importantly you could win FREE STUFF - vinyl promos and test-pressings of new KU tracks/remixes, tickets to Curfew Time nights and all that good stuff. Go here and type your name in. We Have Flashing Lights - 07/11/05

The dukes of dirty house return with their first single in two years, a double A-side aimed purely at rocking the floors in dirty clubs. First up is "Flashing Lights", big room grunge-house with a bass line so dumb it'd make The Kinks proud. On the flip "Curfew Time" kicks out spiky jittering riffs to soften up the punters, then throws in a jungle-flavoured break down of Amazonian proportions to deliver the killer punch. Junior Boys Own will be pimping the plastic out to your nearest vinyl emporium on the 12th of December, and the track will be available from all major download sites on the same date. Catalogue number JNR006 for all you trainspotters out there.

Early support from Pete Tong, Sasha, Caged Baby, Steve Lawler, Justin Robertson, John Digweed, Nic Fanciulli and Pete Heller (big up the lads) - vinyl promos going out this week to the true disciples of the dirt.

Single of the month - i-DJ Magazine, Buzz Chart new entry at No. 6

Episodes 3 and 4 of the King Unique Broadcast series are now in the bag. You know the drill - fat trax, exclusive KU re-edits, dirty mashups and a bloke shouting "K-I-N-G-U-N-I-Q-U-E. BROADCAST!" over the top.
Look for broadcast dates and stations here soon.

Who has flashing lights? - 26/07/05

We do.

Stay tuned...

Oz Q&A - 25/07/05

KU talk porn and Pacman for the heads Down Under, check it out here.

Madeira, Weekenddance: The view from the decks - 21/07/05

8,500 Madeira islanders blasted by lasers, dancing in front of waterfalls, cliffs and the Atlantic ocean while the KU kick out the heavy electro-house sounds. Is dance music still dead then or what?
Read a review of the night here - if you speak Portuguese.

Stop Me - 09/07/05

KU's remix of the new Planet Funk single "Stop Me" is out now. The pairing of Italy's finest with the UK's dons of dirt has yielded another peak time monster - check out the dub for a fat acid attack. More lysergic than Timothy Leary's tongue folks.

Sand. Castle. - 08/07/05

Two big gigs this weekend and next. First up is Castle Dance in the colossal fortress at Vyborg; 15,000 Russians and Finns versus the KU. Could get dirty.
Seven days later KU headline the Weekenddance event on the beach-paradise island of Madeira. We'll be the two happy blokes on stage - see you down the front for the last record.

"Do you fuckers ever make records of your own anymore?" - 18/04/05

Soon. But in the meantime - can we tempt you with a few more remixes?

Out now on vinyl, the 80s Chicago flavoured King Unique mix of "Sail Into The Sun" from the Funky Lowlives. The track is picking up rave reviews, including one from Yogi Haughton over at DJ Magazine. Has the world gone mad? We were so surprised we almost sent Yogi a 'get well' card ;)

Meanwhile, at a dingy pressing plant somewhere in London they're loading up boxes full of purest filthy riff-house. The long awaited (overdue?) King Unique mix of Redanka's "Waves" is finally making it's way towards a record store near you. If you find yourself in a club with crashing waves of bass breaking on your head while scuba diving robots mumble "waves" in your ear do not be alarmed; take a deep breath and go with the flow.

Currently receiving treatment at the King Unique dirt clinic are new singles from Planet Funk and Suicide Sports Club. Both are sounding increasingly grunge-tastic - watch this space.

And then we're finally, FINALLY going to do our own record. Alright?

And then maybe just one more remix...

Festivals - 14/04/05

Summer is almost upon us, which means it's time to come and experience the spine-tingling, ear-bludgeoning sound of the King Unique dex & fx DJ set in a huge field. The choice of field is entirely your own, but we recommend the following:
Global Gathering 2005 near Stratford Upon Avon, THE big dance festival of the summer.
Amsterdam's massive Mystery Land festival - ideal for those who like 'grassy' fields.
Check the DJ Dates page for more dates as they come in.

Interview - 23/03/05

Starved of KU gossip? Go here for a recent interview with the Matts ahead of their Easter weekend gigs.

Edit - 15/02/05

Mylo's "In My Arms" and Peace Division's "What Is This Sound" are both available this month with special King Unique edits. KU's cut-up of "In My Arms" retains the feel good vibes of Mylo's original, while adding the extra sunshine factor of a summer time piss-up in the park. Originally put together by the KU for their DJ set it's now coming out as a limited 500 CD promo on Breastfed.

On vinyl now "NRK100" marks the 100th release on the NRK label and features the KU edit of
Peace Division's "What Is This Sound?". A serious dose of fractured vocal vibes and a siren that'll drill your skull, coupled with one of the Division's finest bass monster moments. Buy, play, enjoy.

Tsunami - 30/12/04

If you haven't given to the earthquake appeal yet please do. You'll stop people who are alive today being dead next week. Worth a few quid.

Fuck The Art - Show Us The Charts - 7/12/04

Fame, record sales and chart places mean nothing at KU HQ - we're just proud to be doing it for the kids. However, for those shallow types who care about such things -

Zane Lowe confirmed his position as Radio 1's most attractive and forward thinking weekday DJ by ranking King Unique's mix of the Killers "Somebody Told Me" second in his top three remixes of 2004. A previous 'Hottest Record In The World' on Zane's show, and now picking up regular plays from the Pete-like-Tong, the track finally gets a long awaited UK release in February 2005.

The King Unique mixes of Dirty Vegas "Walk Into The Sun" have been doing the damage Stateside leading to a No. 1 spot in the US Billboard Clubplay chart. How can such great taste in music go hand in hand with such shit taste in presidents?

Who are Kool Uncle? - 6/12/04

We couldn't possibly comment.

But "Big Dirty Dreams" is the SHIT.

Peace & Love - 5/12/04

New month, new mixes. Peace Division's "What Is This Sound?" and the Freemason's "Love On My Mind" are the latest tracks to get the King Unique electro-disco treatment. Put your leather trousers and glitter-ball earrings on standby you trendy swines.

Ride - 17/11/04
Fans of filthy trippy blippy house - brace yourselves. The King Unique remix of Chable and Bonnici's "Ride" is set for release in January on Alternative Route. Featuring more bleeps than a Tourette's syndrome Pac Man, KU have stripped the prog classic of it's glossy sheen to reveal the grimy electronic monster lurking at it's core. Promo vinyls will be out in two weeks; get your order in with your local plastic pimp.

NRK remix - 5/11/04
This week KU are back in the studio, adding their trademark dirty beats and sick synthesizers to a track for NRK's 100th release. Look out for promos before Xmas.

Essential Mix - 31/10/04
King Unique's latest Essential Mix airs tonight on Radio 1. Two hours of dirty house, with loads of one-off remixes, edits and bootlegs specially recorded for the show. Check Radio 1's site here for the full tracklisting. Have it.

Excession - 12/10/04
King Unique have joined the all-star line up at the Excession DJ agency, home to Sasha, Lawler and Zabiela to name a few. After concentrating exclusively on productions for the last 12 months KU will be back out on the road in 2005. See you by the bass bins.
